SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Jeremy Lynn won the singles division Thursday and led Joplin to a share of the Ozark Conference tennis championship, with Glendale, at Cooper Complex.

Lynn shut out his first two opponents, then defeated Micah Klousia of Glendale, 6-3, 7-5 for first place.

Joplin’s Luke Frogge and Edran Ali won the No. 1 doubles title with a 6-4, 6-0 decision against Luke Hanson and John Nahon of Glendale.

“I’m proud of the kids’ performance today. They really played well,” said Joplin head coach Sean McWilliams.

“No. 1 doubles especially played the best tennis they’ve played all year.

“We beat some really tough opponents. We didn’t have a No. 1 player at No. 1 doubles and they defeated a couple of No. 1 players from different teams.”

In No. 2 singles, Joplin’s Brooks Butler advanced to the final before he was defeated by Trevor Bachus of Glendale, 6-0, 6-3. Joplin’s No. 2 doubles team of Duncan Ford and Andrew Roberts lost to Glendale, 6-3, 7-5.

The conference title is Joplin’s first since 2007.

“For all of our kids to be in the championships says a lot about the kids and the outstanding day we had,” McWilliams said.

Joplin 2, Camdenton 1

Joplin’s Kate Beckham scored the game-winning goal in Joplin’s victory against Camdenton at South Middle School.

Beckham’s goal came on a corner kick with three minutes left in the game.

Joplin had taken a 1-0 lead in the first half on a goal by Anna Banwart with an assist by Megan Matheson.

“It was a hustle play by Megan,” said Joplin head coach Ed Miller. “She created an opportunity for us to score.

“It was our biggest victory of the year. We not only played hard for one half, we played hard for two halves, especially with the heat and everything,” Miller said.

“We changed our defensive formation,” he said. “We practiced it for an hour yesterday. The girls got the gist of it and we were able to slow down Camdenton.”

Baseball

Webb City 9, Seneca 8

SENECA, Mo. — Seth Watkins came through with a pair of clutch doubles to propel Webb City to a nine-inning victory.

With the Cardinals trailing 7-6 in the top of the seventh inning, Watkins pounded a double to score Breckin Williams. That tied the game at 7-7 and sent it to extra innings, then Watkins came through again.

Duncan Fletcher singled and later scored the go-ahead run on a James single in the top of the ninth.

The Indians pushed across a run in the bottom of the ninth. Richie Peoples recorded a strikeout to record the save for the Cardinals.

Watkins finished with three hits and four RBI. Andrew McDaniel added a pair of hits and two RBI.

The Indians, who had 19 hits, were led by Payton Rawlins’ three hits and three RBI. Dalan Merriman also had three hits.

Carl Junction 4, Nixa 0

NIXA, Mo. — The Carl Junction Bulldogs scored four runs, but they only needed one behind the arm of southpaw Payton Walker as they blanked Nixa in nonconference action.

Walker allowed two hits and didn’t walk a batter while striking out 11.

The Bulldogs got timely hits as several two-out swings drove in runs. Jeff Terry led the offense with two hits and an RBI while Nathan Skaggs, Chase Marrs and Keegan Pittman added an RBI apiece.

The Bulldogs (14-8) will host Rogers Heritage at 4:30 p.m. Monday.

McAuley 10, Liberal 3

LIBERAL, Mo. — Shaw Robertson and Collin Hughes each blasted home runs for the McAuley Warriors as they downed Liberal.

It was a late offensive surge that propelled the Warriors. The game was tied 1-1 in the fifth before McAuley plated two runs in the fifth and three each in the sixth and seventh.

Robertson picked up the victory by allowing three runs on five hits. He also had three hits, scored a pair of runs and drove in two.

Anthony Bertoncino slugged four hits for the Warriors. Mitch Wear added a pair of hits, three runs scored and two RBI. Hughes tallied a pair of hits.
