Carl Junction opens season with convincing victory

CARTHAGE, Mo. — Top-seeded Carl Junction Bulldogs cruised past the eighth-seeded Monett Cubs 89-37 on Monday night in the first round of the 66th annual Carthage Invitational.

Travis Vogt led Carl Junction with 25 points, while Matt Magree added 17. Dustin Saterlee and Hunter McPherson chipped in with 10 points each.

The Bulldogs stormed out to a 48-22 halftime lead.

Kyle Woods led Monett with 16 points.

In the other game of the Carthage tournament on Monday, the fifth-seeded Carthage Tigers topped the fourth-seeded Seneca Indians 63-51.

Carl Junction will face Carthage in the winner’s semifinal at 6 p.m. Friday. Seneca will play Monett in the consolation semifinal at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Pierce City Boys

PIERCE CITY, Mo. — Fourth-seeded Thomas Jefferson pulled away from Sarcoxie in the fourth period in posting a 55-45 opening victory.

The Cavaliers led only 40-39 entering the final eight minutes.

No. 1 seed Diamond trimmed Exeter 58-21 behind Logan Myers’ 20 points and Brodie Bien’s 15. Ryan Jinks added 12.

Thomas Jefferson, which hit all 14 of its free throws, received 18 points from Tyler Thurman (who sank 4 of 8 treys), 14 from John Burnett and 12 from Justin Brown (who added nine blocked shots).

 Justin Myers scored 21 points for Sarcoxie.

Today’s schedule: Crane (3) vs. Verona, 6 p.m.; Pierce City (2) vs. East Newton, 7:30.

Lockwood Boys

LOCKWOOD, Mo. — The College Heights Cougars suffered a 85-38 loss to Billings on in the first round of the Dennis Cornish Classic.

Billings jumped out to a 31-6 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 45-20 at halftime.

Brady Chastain hit five 3-pointers and scored 27 points to lead Billings. Dawson Meyer and Chad Yokum added 22 and 19, respectively, for Billings.

Josh Woodmansee led all College Heights scorers with 11, while Jake Hamilton scored 10.

In the other tournament game Monday, Jasper beat Pleasant Hope 60-45.

The tournament will continue today with Lamar playing Golden City at 6 p.m. and Liberal playing Lockwood at 7:30 p.m.

College Heights will play in the consolation semifinals on Friday against Pleasant Hope.

Diamond Girls

DIAMOND, Mo. — The McAuley Warriors girls fell 35-30 to Jasper on at the Diamond Tournament.

McAuley kept the game close, trailing only 26-20 at the end of three quarters.

Jasper was led by 15 points from Adi Etcheson.

Victoria Foley led the Warriors with 10.

McAuley will face Sarcoxie, a 31-24 loser to Diamond, at 6 p.m. Friday in the losers’ bracket. Diamond will play Jasper at 6 p.m. Thursday in the semifinals.

Clever Boys

CLEVER, Mo. — The McAuley Warriors fell 82-47 to the Clever Bluejays in the Clever Invitational.

Clever held a 45-28 halftime lead and extended it to 71-41 after three quarters.

Dalton Fisher paced Clever’s scorers with 28 points.

McAuley was led by Shaw Robertson and Connor Schlegel with 12 points each.

The Warriors will play Thursday night against Morrisville in the Clever Invitational.
