Webb City football team honored

WEBB CITY, Mo. —  Performance under pressure was celebrated Sunday afternoon in Webb City as players, coaches and families gathered at Webb City High School to honor the Cardinals’ third football Class 4 state championship in a row.

All of the team’s players were honored during the afternoon’s celebration, where the state championship trophy was presented to the team. Head Coach John Roderique spoke during the ceremony.

“We’re always asked about how we keep doing this, how we keep a winning attitude and how we put a winning team out there every year,” Roderique said. “It comes down to two things: Our players and our coaches. They put everything they have out there. I’m extremely proud of the hard work and dedication in everything they do on and off the football field. I’ll never stop being grateful for those coaches who help lead our team.”

State Rep. Charlie Davis also attended the ceremony to present the team with a House of Representatives resolution honoring the team’s accomplishments. Davis represents District 128, which includes Webb City.

“I’m always asked about Webb City football where ever I go,” Davis said. “I tell people that there is not a school district that people aren’t more involved than the Webb City School District. This community is a team and there is no place in the state with more pride in their team than what we have right here.”

JC Chevere, whose recently released “Webb City Anthem,” was scheduled to make an appearance at Sunday’s event, but had to cancel due to an illness in his family. It was unclear Sunday whether his scheduled video shoot for the song will take place Tuesday.

“The song is one of those cool things that have come out of all of this,” Roderique said. “We’re looking forward to having him here eventually.”

The Nov. 24 win over Helias Catholic at the Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis marked the third straight 15-0 perfect season capped with a state title.
