Prep roundup: Carl Junction tops Lamar

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Branch McGriff and Tyler Armentrout hit back-to-back two-run singles in the third inning as Carl Junction outlasted Lamar 4-2 in a Big 8 Conference game on Tuesday afternoon.

Carl Junction’s Dalton Cloven and Lamar’s Tripp Tucker tossed complete games. Cloven struck out five and walked two.

Lamar, which outhit Carl Junction 9-7, was led by Cedric Gartman, who was 3-for-4 with a double. Nate Landes of Carl Junction was 3-for-4.

Purdy 4, McAuley 3

PURDY, Mo. — McAuley Catholic couldn’t overcome six errors in a one-run loss to Purdy.

McAuley pitcher Shaw Robertson allowed only one hit and recorded 12 strikeouts, but Purdy took advantage of the Warriors’ mistakes in the field.

Roberton also was 3-for-3 with a home run and two RBI. Adam Robertson and Anthony Bertoncino were each 2-for-4.

McAuley (2-5, 2-2 Ozark 7 Conference) scored one run in the top of the seventh and had runners on the corners with two outs, but couldn’t plate the tying run.

The Warriors will try to bounce back today at Pierce City.

Branson 13, Webb City 5

WEBB CITY, Mo. — The Pirates’ Barrett White, a right-hander, worked six innings and had two hits and as many RBI.

Ricky Ward had three hits and two runs scored to pace a 15-hit salvo at Barnes Field. Lake Keller and Austin Brogan each matched teammate White’s output at the plate.

Webb City received two hits apiece from Grant Dilworth and Jay Roderique. Austin White and Roderique each drove in two runs.

Webb City (2-12, 1-2 Central Ozark Conference Large Division) entertains Carthage at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Soccer

Carl Junction 7, Hillcrest 1

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Bekah Dinwiddie and Kylie Roach each had an assist for the Bulldogs.

Five players scored a goal for Carl Junction, which outshot Hillcrest 15-1. Callie Degani, Sydney Solberg, Roach and Taylor Beck scored in the first half, then Beck assisted on a goal by Anissa Williams in the second half.

McAuley 3, Greenwood 1

Mary Street and Lucy Borgmeyer teamed up for a pair of goals as the McAuley Catholic Warriors avenged a 3-0 loss to Greenwood earlier this season.

Street scored on an assist from Borgmeyer to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Greenwood tied the game at 1 with a Bayley Slaven goal in the first half.

McAuley (4-3) scored two more goals in the second half to secure the win. Ally Adrian scored unassisted, and Borgmeyer found Street for the pair’s second goal.

The Warriors will be at home against Springfield Central at 5 p.m. on Thursday.

Kickapoo 5, Joplin 0

The visiting Chiefs had a 19-2 advantage in shots on goal, according to Joplin statistics, in the Ozark Conference match.

Kickapoo, which dropped the Eagles to 6-8 overall and 1-2 in the Ozark Conference, received two goals apiece from Kenzie Dunaway and Ariel Wood.

“We had a couple of opportunities,” Joplin coach Ed Miller said. “But for the most part we chased them. They moved the ball very well.”

Joplin sophomore Megan Rowe had 14 saves in the match at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

“She had some outstanding saves, too,” Miller said.

The Eagles visit Hillcrest in Springfield on Thursday with the junior varsity match opening the program at 4:30 p.m.

Tennis

Carl Junction 8, Clever 1

CLEVER—The Carl Junction tennis team improved to 7-0 with an 8-1 win over Clever on Tuesday.

Carl Junction’s No. 1 doubles team of Ben Coltharp and Andy Gloshen also improved to 7-0 by beating Clever’s Clayton Coram and Steven Schupbach 8-0.

Coltharp beat Coram 8-4 in No. 1 singles, and Gloshen defeated Gabe Hanafin 8-1 in No. 2 singles.

Carl Junction will travel to face Carthage at 4 p.m. today.

Golf

Mount Vernon triumphs

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Korey Pryor was medalist with a 3-over-par 39 over the front nine at Briarbrook Golf Course to help the Mountaineers claim the trianguler.

Team scores: Mount Vernon 170, Carl Junction 174 and Monett 192.

Andre Reed and Matt Wilson shot 43s for Carl Junction. Garrett Craig had the low score for Monett with 41.
