The Webb City High School girls basketball team boosted its record to 5-2 by beating Joplin 62-25 in a nonconference game at Missouri Southern State University on Tuesday night.
Webb City beat Joplin 56-20 on Saturday in the seventh-place game of the Joplin Freeman Lady Eagle Classic at MSSU.
The Cardinals led Tuesday night’s game 39-12 at the half in Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium. Mikaela Burgess, a 5-foot-6 junior, sank four treys in scoring 26 points to pace the Cardinals. Desirea Buerge, a 6-0 sophomore, tallied 11 and 6-2 junior Casey Heger had nine.
Kelsey Johnson, a 5-5 junior, had three treys for nine points to lead the Eagles. Danielle Hollingshead, a 6-1 junior, added eight.
Bentonville boys 64, Webb City 53
BENTONVILLE, Ark. — The Tigers pulled away in the fourth quarter to hand the Cardinals their first loss after winning the Arvest Hoopfest at Rogers Heritage last week.
Nick Smith, 6-8 senior who has signed with Belmont (Tenn.), scored eight of his 25 points in the final period. The Tigers had a scoring advantage of 21-14 in the final quarter.
Class 7A Bentonville, which split two games with Webb City in 2011-12, received 15 points from Aaron Heard and 13 from Austin Haggard.
Webb City was led in scoring by Nate Brown and Kohl Slaughter with 15 apiece. John Roderique tallied nine.
Webb City (3-1) resumes by visiting Joplin on Friday. The boys tripleheader in Young Gymnasium at Missouri Southern State University will start at 4:30 p.m. with the freshman contest.
Carthage beats Joplin
CARTHAGE, Mo. — Carthage logged six pins in beating Joplin 51-25 in a high school wrestling dual on Tuesday night.
Carthage, 4-0 in duals, received pins from Gage Gartner at 120 pounds, River Maggard at 126, Seth Logan at 132, Trevor Feagans at 128, Skyler Bloomer at 170 and Chad Robbins at 195.
Securing pins for Joplin were Caden Carlin at 106, Dakota Mavis at 145 and Danny Drouin at 220.
Carthage will tackle Willard and host Ozark at 5 p.m. next Tuesday in a double dual.
Joplin, Webb City go 2-2
WEBB CITY, Mo. — Joplin and Webb City went 2-2 in dual meets Tuesday night at the Webb City High School pool.
The Eagles beat Webb City 87-84 and Marshfield 116-19 and lost to Nevada 85-70 and Kickapoo 131-45.
Webb City’s victories came ove rNevada 84-82 and Marshfield 121-14, and the Cardinals lost to Kickapoo 136-43 and Joplin.
Grace Reichard of Nevada posted a state-qualifying time while winning the 100-yard butterfly in 1 minute, 11.95 seconds. The qualifying standard for the event is 1:12.49. Reichard also won the 200 freestyle and swam a leg on the Tigers’ winning 200 medley relay team.
Joplin’s Kate Stauffer won the 100 butterfly (1:08.05) and took second in the 100 breaststroke, two seconds behind Reichard. The Eagles took third in both the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays.
Joplin’s Casera Wootton was fourth in the 500 freestyle, and fifth places went to Kathleen Hughes in the 200 freestyle, Anna Dvais in the 200 IM and Lina Bartel in the 100 breaststroke.
Webb City’s Alicia hargis placed second in the one-meter diving for Webb City’s highest finish.
Alex Brake took third in the 100 freestyle and fourth in the 50 free, Sydney Philpot was fourth in the 200 IM and fifth in the 100 butterfly, and Katarina Wallace was third in the 100 buttefly and fifth in the 100 backstroke. Webb City also had fifth places from Aubrey Holt (500 freestyle) and Zoey Beck (diving), and the Cardinals were fourth in the 200 freestyle, 400 freestyle and 200 medley relays.
