Joplin, Thomas Jefferson earn district team tennis titles

Joplin successfully defended its Class 2 District 12 team championship with a 5-0 victory over Carthage on Wednesday afternoon at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

The Eagles (16-3) advance to sectional play on May 18 at the site of the District 11 winner.

The Eagles’ Jeremy Lynn, Luke Frogge, Edran Ali, Brooks Butler and Sam Willcoxon won their singles matches in straight sets. Of the five matches that were completed, the Eagles lost more than one game in only two sets.

The focus shifts to individual honors on Friday when the singles and doubles district tournament is played Friday at the Joplin Athletic Complex, starting at 9 a.m.

Thomas Jefferson 5, Carl Junction 4

After splitting six singles matches and two doubles matches, the Cavaliers’ John Burnett and Joe Scott won their No. 2 doubles match 6-2, 6-4 to provide the decisive point at the Millennium Tennis & Fitness Center.

Thomas Jefferson will be the host for the four-team sectional meet on May 18. It also is the host for the singles and doubles district competition on Friday, beginning at 8:30 a.m. Singles matches will be played at Millennium, and the doubles matches will be held on the Thomas Jefferson courts.

Burnett, Scott and Levi Vasquez won their singles matches for the Cavaliers, and Joseph-Vasquez also won in doubles.

Carl Junction received singles victories from Ben Coltharp, Andrew Gloshen and Matt Caper. Coltharp-Gloshen also prevailed at No. 1 doubles.


Joplin 7, Ozark 5

OZARK, Mo. — Adam St. Peter rapped three hits and drove in a run to help Joplin beat Ozark on Wednesday in a nonconference high school game.

The Eagles garnered 11 hits. Brett Graham, who had an RBI, joined Colton Johnson and Gavin Jones with two safeties.

Starting junior right-hander Kealin Smith picked up the pitching decision and senior right-hander Blake Brown notched the save.

Ozark received three hits from Collin Fraley and a pair from Caleb Essick.

Joplin, 13-10 overall, hopes to finish its regular-season schedule at 4:30 p.m. today in the Ozark Conference with a varsity-junior varsity doubleheader at Springfield Kickapoo.
