Kickapoo converted four corner kicks into goals and defeated Joplin 5-0 Tuesday night in a semifinal match of the Class 3 District 12 girls soccer tournament on the Chiefs’ field.
The game was scoreless for almost 30 minutes before Hannah Sweaney scored off an assist from Mirian Melugin. Meluin scored eight minutes later to give Kickapoo a 2-0 halftime lead.
Kenzie Dunaway, Natalie Closser and Elizabeth Sherman added second-half goals.
“The girls went out and played hard, gave a good effort,” Joplin coach Ed Miller said. “It was 0-0 for the first 30 minutes.
“After that, we played OK. On the corner kicks, we couldn’t get the ball out of the box. We played hard and played as a team.”
Kickapoo had a 16-8 advantage in shots. Goalkeeper Megan Rowe made eight saves for Joplin (10-14), and Molly Wassan had six saves for Kickapoo.
The top-seeded Chiefs (9-12) face Springfield Central (11-6) in the championship match at 6 p.m. Friday. Central downed Parkview 3-1 in the second semifinal, ending the Vikings’ season with a 12-10 record.
