Wilks leaving position as McAuley girls basketball coach

From staff reports

— Greg Wilks has resigned after two seasons as girls basketball coach at McAuley Catholic High School.

“We believe Coach Wilks did a nice job building a foundation,” McAuley athletics director Brenden Gubera said., “He also was involved a bit with our junior high program (under Heidi Gardner).

”We appreciate all coach (Wilks) did for us,” Gubera said. “We hope he enjoyed the two seasons. We wish him luck.

“Coach (Butch) Mulvaney, who assisted (Wilks), isn’t interested in the varsity vacancy,” Gubera said.

The varsity Warriors finished 5-21 overall — more than double their wins from the 2011-12 season — and 1-4 in the Ozark 7 Conference.

McAuley was competitive in several other games, Gubera said, The Warriors lost four games by five points or less.

Wilks, who retired from the Carl Junction system as an elementary teacher, has many years of coaching — with Mulvaney helping — traveling girls teams or AAU. He also served several years as the eighth-grade girls coach at Carl Junction.

Wilks, a 1968 Joplin High School graduate, served in the military before attending Crowder College and securing his degree from Missouri Southern. He taught at Avilla and Monett before coming to Carl Junction.

Gubera said the position currently is only for coaching.
