Nevada's Reichard advances to second day of state swimming

ST. PETERS, Mo. — Nevada junior Grace Reichard earned another day in the pool.

Reichard finished eighth in the 100-yard breast stroke and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle during preliminaries of the MSHSAA girls state swimming championships on Friday at St. Peters, Mo.

By finishing in the top eight of the breast stroke, Reichard guaranteed herself a medal in today’s final heat. She will compete in today’s consolation heat of the 200 freestyle and can finish no better than ninth place.

Reichard trimmed two seconds off her seed time in the breast stroke, finishing in 1:08.61. Blue Springs junior Corinne Rinne took first in preliminaries with a time of 1:05.48. Reichard improved her seed time by more than a second in the 200 freestyle to take ninth. Rock Bridge freshman Kelley Tackett had the best preliminary time of 1:50.69.

Joplin sophomore Kate Stauffer failed to advance to today’s finals in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle. She finished 35th in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.92 seconds. Stauffer finished the 100 freestyle in 56.84 seconds for 43rd place. The top 16 advanced.

“She did really well and worked really hard this season,” Joplin coach Blair Dance said. “When you go to state, it’s just a whole different ballgame. But her being able to come up here and compete as a sophomore, it shows so much potential for her to do even more as a junior and senior.”

Carthage sophomore Mercy Housh failed to advance in the 200 IM and the 500-yard freestyle, finishing 32nd and 23rd in the respective events.
