Joplin made short work of winning the Class 2 District 12 district tennis championship on Wednesday.

The Eagles dispatched Central 5-0 in the championship match.

“I’m proud of the kids,” said coach Sean McWilliams. “Winning district, that was one of our goals, along with winning the (Ozark) conference. ... Hopefully we have more to come.”

The victory qualifies Joplin for team sectional competition on Friday, May 18 at a site to be determined, McWilliams said.

Jeremy Lynn, Brooks Butler, Andrew Roberts, Edran Ali and Duncan Ford scored consecutive-set singles victories for the Eagles.

Luke Frogge, at No. 2, did not complete his singles match.

Play ended when Joplin had the five points needed to clinch the team victory.

The Eagles will compete in district individual competition today at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

The seed meeting starts at 8:30 and competition begins at approximately 9:30. Other teams entered are Carthage, Neosho, Webb City and Central.

Baseball

Carl Junction 16, Colgan 15

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Josh Petty singled home the game-winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning as the Bulldogs outslugged St. Mary’s-Colgan.

Chase Marrs led off the Carl Junction ninth with a single, and Branche McGriff reached base when his sacrifice bunt was misplayed. Jaren Hulette’s sacrifice moved both runners into scoring position, and after an intentional walk to Keegan Pittman, Petty singled to right-center field over a drawn-in outfield.

Nathan Skaggs went 3-for-5 with two doubles and a single and drove in four runs for the Bulldogs (15-9). Payton Walker, whose bases-loaded triple highlighted an eight-run fifth, contributed two hits and four RBI, and McGriff and Petty each had two hits and two RBI.

Jesse Newcomb had three hits, including a three-run home run in the third inning, for the Panthers, and Drew Dawson added two hits.

Carl Junction, seeded fifth, opens Class 4 district play against Republic at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Republic.

Joplin 11, Camdenton 1

CAMDENTON, Mo. — Bryce Ash hit a pair of doubles and drove in three runs and Joplin concluded Ozark Conference play with a victory.

The Eagles, 12-12 overall, wound up 5-4 in the league.

Joplin plays a makeup game at 4:30 p.m. today at Nixa, then opens district action at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Republic, against Carthage.

Starter Caleb Garton, winner Adam St. Peter and Tristan combined to limit the Lakers to four hits on Thursday. Brett Graham doubled and drove in three runs for the Eagles.

Webb City 2, Rogersville 1

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Three Webb City pitchers combined on a two-hitter and Webb City pushed across an unearned run in the bottom of the sixth inning for a nonconference victory.

The Cardinals broke the 1-1 tie when a bases-loaded grounder was mishandled.

Breckin Williams worked the first three innings for Webb City and struck out six. Keaton Teal also pitched three innings, getting the win, and Jay Roderique finished for the save.

Austin White and Williams each had two hits to supply the Webb City offense. White singled in a run in the third and also made several good defensive plays at shortstop, said coach Chris Taylor.

“It was a well-played game, a good team win for us,” Taylor said.

Webb City, 15-7, meets McDonald County in a district tournament opener at 11 a.m. Saturday in Republic.

Joplin 2, McAuley 0

Joplin broke a scoreless tie on Anna Banwart’s penalty kick 12 minutes into the second half.

The Eagles wrapped up their regular-season scheduled on Senior Night at Junge Field.

Kellie Stringer added the final goal in the 73rd minute, on a shot over the McAuley goalkeeper’s head from about 30 yards out.

Joplin statistics showed the Eagles with a 9-3 advantage in shots and Megan Rowe with a pair of saves.

“The defense is doing fine, the goalie is doing fine,” said Joplin coach Ed Miller. “We’re trying to figure out how to get our offense going, how to score goals.”

Joplin, 8-14, will host the district tournament starting on Monday. The opening night schedule pairs the Eagles vs. Carthage at 4:30- and No. 3 seeded-Parkview vs. Neosho at 6:30.
