Prep roundup: CJ blanks Webb City, Joplin golf wins tourney

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Taylor Beck scored a hat trick with three goals in Carl Junction’s 8-0 victory against Webb City on Monday at Cardinal Stadium.

Sydney Solberg, who scored the only goal of the first half, had two goals and two assists. Callie Degani, Anissa Williams and Bekah Dinwiddie also scored for Carl Junction.

Central 2, Joplin 1

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Aspen Hawkins’ unassisted goal at the 46-minute mark in the second half lifted the Bulldogs at Harrison Stadium.

“We didn’t play two good halves,” Joplin coach Ed Miller said. “We played well in the first half and had 11 shots. We have to find ways to score.”

Joplin’s Anna Banwart and Central’s Analynn Salvato, assisted by Hawkins, had goals in the first half.

The Eagles, who got nine saves from Megan Rowe, slipped to 3-5 with the nonconference loss.


Yuhas, Joplin golf wins title at Springfield

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Nick Yuhas won the Springfield Public Schools Invitational and led Joplin to the team championship at Hickory Hills.

Yuhas, a junior, shot a 1-over-par 73, one stroke better than second-place Rob Mahaffey of Rogersville. Joplin senior Griffen Locke was third with a 75.

“It was a big win,” said Joplin golf coach Jack Pace. “Nick and Griffen both played well. They always do.

“Nos. 3, 4 and 5 stepped up and shot in the 80s, so it was a total team effort,” he said. “They all played pretty well.”

Tamerik Branham, a sophomore, shot 87, and sophomore Austin Garritson and freshman Chance Sticklen shot 89.

Joplin finished at 324, one shot better than Kickapoo and Glendale, who tied for second place.

Aurora’s Grant Seifried, who placed sixth, shot a 77 and led the Houn’ Dawgs to fourth place in the 14-team tournament. Josh Fronabargar of Aurora and Derrick Catron of Carthage tied for 13th place with an 81. Carthage placed ninth as a team.
