Prep roundup: Joplin, Thomas Jefferson advance in district tennis

PITTSBURG, Kan. — Joplin and Thomas Jefferson advanced to championship  matches in their respective classes in MSHSAA district team tennis on Tuesday.

Class 2 Joplin shut out Carthage 5-0 at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

It took about four hours for Class 1 Thomas Jefferson to nip Clever 5-4 in the Millennium Tennis and Fitness Club.

Sean McWilliams’ Eagles and Tom Brumfield’s Cavaliers, because of their No. 1 seeding, have home courts for the championship matches.

Springfield Central visits Joplin at 4 p.m. today. Mount Vernon, a 5-2 semifinal winner against Carl Junction, visits Thomas Jefferson at 4 p.m. on Thursday.

Carthage ousted Neosho 5-3 and Central beat Webb City 5-0 in Monday matches in Class 2. Carl Junction defeated Republic 5-1 and Clever hurdled Monett 5-2 in Class 1.

Joplin has a 9-0 win to its credit against Central during the regular season. Thomas Jefferson defeated Mount Vernon 6-3 earlier in the campaign.

Joplin, against Carthage, received singles wins from Jeremy Lynn, Luke Frogge, Andrew Roberts, Edran Ali and Duncan Ford. Brooks Butler also was leading 7-5, 1-0.

Cavaliers Frankie Cascone and Preston Carpenter rallied to beat Brandon Laney-Jordan Herring 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles to lift Thomas Jefferson past Clever.

Alex Oserowsky and Jake Hockman also won in doubles for the Cavaliers. Oserowsky, Hockman and John Burnett won in singles.

BASEBALL

Frontenac 4, Carl Junction 1

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Frontenac scored three runs in the eighth inning and defeated Carl Junction in a nonconference baseball game.

The Raiders took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, but Carl Junction tied the score with a bases-loaded walk in the sixth.

The Bulldogs outhit Frontenac 10-8. Kurlin Hulette had three hits, and Payton Walker and Jeff Terry each had two hits for Carl Junction.

Walker pitched seven innings, struck out seven and walked none.

Kickapoo 4, Webb City 0

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Cardinals were limited to just two hits by a trio of Chiefs in the nonconference contest.

Webb City (14-7) entertains Rogersville at 4:30 p.m. today in a makeup game on “Senior Day.”

Kickapoo (18-7) broke up the scoreless tie with a run in the fifth inning and added three in the sixth.

Webb City hits were by Austin White (triple) and Richie Peoples (single). Gage Belcher scattered six hits.

Carl Junction blanks McAuley

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Kelsey Swarens scored a pair of goals to help Carl Junction top McAuley 4-0 on senior night.

Swarens scored off an assists from Sydney Solberg just eight minutes into the game and then added an unassisted goal 50 minutes later to make it 2-0.

Taylor Beck scored in the 62nd minute before Solberg added an unassisted goal of her own 11 minutes later.

Carl Junction improved to 15-6 with the win and will travel to Ozark on Thursday.
