Dustin Larsen, girls basketball coach the past 10 seasons at Springfield Catholic, was approved by the Joplin School Board as the Eagles’ coach on Tuesday night.
Larsen compiled an overall record of 169-110 at Springfield Catholic. His teams played for nine district titles. Four of those teams won and the team reached the state semifinals on two occasions.
The 2011-12 team lost to eventual Class 3 champion Mount Vernon in the first round of the state playoffs.
Larsen replaces Vicki Spivy. She was dismissed after serving as the girls head coach for three seasons.
Said Joplin athletic director Jeff Starkweather: “We’re very excited to have Coach Larsen on board. He’s young and has been a successful head coach for several years.
“Coach Larsen has a vision and plan to develop the Joplin girls basketball program at all levels — Joplin Youth Basketball through the high school,” Starkweather said. “That’s exactly what we need. He did that at Springfield Catholic.
“We need stability and consistency in our program,” Starkweather said. “I believe he can bring us that.”
