SALINA, Kan. —
Two Columbus wrestlers and two Pittsburg wrestlers advanced to the semifinals Friday at the Class 4A KSHSAA Wrestling Championships at the Bicentennial Center.
Taylor Watkins of Columbus, a sophomore at 152 pounds, decisioned John Peden of Goodland 1-0 in the quarterfinals, while teammate Gavin Houser, a senior at 195, advanced to the semifinals with an 8-3 decision over Tyler Peterson of Lindsborg-Smoky Valley.
After a scoreless first period, Houser scored on a escape early in the second period, fell behind 2-1, then took a 3-2 lead going into the third period.
Watkins and Houser pinned their opponents in the first round.
Pittsburg’s Levi Kester, a junior at 106, decisioned Emmanuel Browne of Kansas City Sumner 12-10 in the quarterfinals. Gershom Avalos, a senior at 220, advanced to the semifinals with an 11-1 major decision against Jon Yates of Buhler.
Kester and Avalos pinned their first-round opponents in the second period.
