Joplin’s Samantha Stout and Carthage’s Abbey Catron — both sophomores — are headed for the MSHSAA Class 2 Girls Golf Championships.
Stout tied for third and Catron tied for eighth on Monday in Sectional 3 at the Sedalia Country Club.
Class 1 Mount Vernon, meanwhile, is headed for state as a team after finishing runner-up to Sedalia Sacred Heart in Sectional 2 at Frank E. Peters Municipal in Nevada.
Top two teams and the top 12 individuals not on those teams advance to state.
Class 2 qualifiers will play next Monday and Tuesday at The Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau. Class 1 will be held at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield.
Class 2, Sectional 3
SEDALIA, Mo. — Stout shot a 14-over-par 85 and Catron, the daughter of Tiger coach Lowell Catron, posted a 90.
Glendale’s Sun Young Jung shot a 77 for medalist honors.
Team scores were West Plains 376, Lee’s Summit West 380, Kickapoo 384, Carthage 387 and Warrensburg 290.
The West Plains pair of Keely Temple and Courtney Cox finished in front of Stout with 82 and 83, respectively.
Said Carthage coach Lowell Catron: “It’s hard to explain but it was a tough day to shoot good scores. It was cold, wet, the wind was blowing and pin placements were difficult.”
Added Joplin athletics director Jeff Starkweather (subbing for coach Shannon Neill): “It was very cold and windy. We’re pleased that Samantha (Stout) made it through with an 85.”
Joplin’s Alyx Colson and Lynsey Fichtner didn’t advance. Also, Carl Junction’s Maddie Ferson and Carthage’s Courtney Catron, Kelsey Frost, Lindsay Borland and Emily Pence didn’t advance.
Added Starkweather: “Coach Neill and I are very proud of Alyx (Colson) and Lynsey (Fichtner) qualifying for sectionals. They’re sophomores, too, and they represented Joplin High School in a great way. Hopefully, they’ll return to sectionals next year and take the next step.”
Class 1, Sectional 2
NEVADA, Mo. — Ashley Childers tied for fourth with a 15-over-par 87 to pace Mount Vernon.
Megan Pope and Hailee Dudley shot 89 and 91, respectively, for the Mountaineers. Their other members: Hayley Bowles and Lexi Farmer.
Team scores were Sacred Heart 335, Mount Vernon 374, Rogersville 412, Buffalo 434, Pembroke Hill 442 and Greenwood 469.
Cole Camp’s Megan Keck shot a 2-over-par 74 for medalist honors.
Qualifiers also included Tiana Brownen and Elyssa Esposito, both of Seneca, and Hannah Householder of Nevada.
Katie Griffin also represented Seneca.
