CARTHAGE, Mo. — Joplin qualified three players for sectional competition, paced by medalist Samantha Stout, and Carthage finished second to advance to highlight local performances in the Class 2 District 6 Tournament on Monday.

Stout shot a 3-over-par, 35-39—74, on the Carthage Golf Course and was joined by fellow sophomores Alyx Colson and Lynsey Fichtner in qualifying for sectionals next Monday at the Sedalia Country Club.

Carthage, with 376, trailed only Lee’s Summit West (361) in the 10-team field. Republic, with 386, bested Joplin by one stroke for third place.

Courtney Catron and Kelsey Frost paced Carthage with 85 and 88, respectively.

Abbey Catron of Carthage and Maddie Ferson of Carl Junction had 92s to tie for ninth.

Said Joplin coach Shannon Neill: “Samantha was awesome. Today, she was on target.

“And,” Neill added with a laugh, “I think she likes the Carthage course.”

Agreed Stout: “It’s my best round. ... ever. It’s a nice course. I like it.”

Stout said she had birdies on No. 4 and No. 17.

“The back nine has challenging holes, but I’ve been able to play them pretty well,” Stout said.

SOCCER

Joplin 5, Carl Junction 1

The Eagles, improving to 12-1-1, received two goals apiece from Ryan Estus and Domi Salcedo in beating the Bulldogs at the Joplin Athletic Complex.

Joplin led 2-0 at the half on goals by Estus and Salcedo and hiked the margin to 4-0 in the second on goals by Estus and Garrett Ward.

Lane Morrill tallied for Carl Junction before Salcedo closed out the scoring.

Jon Ponce had two assists for the Eagles.

Said Joplin coach Ed Miller: “We moved the ball around quite well. We didn’t finish some opportunities. But give Carl Junction credit for playing an intelligent match.”

The Eagles visit Springfield Kickapoo tonight for an Ozark Conference showdown. The junior varsity match is set for 5 p.m. with the varsity to follow at about 6:40, Miller said.

SOFTBALL

Waynesville rallies past Joplin

Waynesville came from behind with six runs in the top of the seventh inning and defeated Joplin 15-13 in an Ozark Conference game at Joplin Athletic Complex.

Joplin, which scored four runs in the first inning, took an 11-6 lead with a six-run fourth inning.

The Eagles’ Krystal Schulze went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs, Kenzie Goswick went 3-for-5 with two doubles and an RBI and Kelsey Gould hit a solo home run and scored three runs.

Carl Junction tops Lamar in 8th

CARL JUNCTION, Mo. — Arista Pattyson’s eighth-inning double drove in Bryce Boyd with the winning run in Carl Junction’s 1-0 victory over Lamar in a Big 8 Conference game.

Sidney Koch tossed a two-hit shutout. The Bulldogs’ Boyd, Tosha Steele, Pattyson and Katlyn Frazier each had two hits.

TENNIS

Thomas Jefferson 5, College Heights 1

Thise Scholfield-Johnson beat Abby Mansley 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles as the third-seeded Cavaliers prevailed in team  competition of the Class 1 District Tournament at the Millennium Tennis and Fitness Club.

Monett beat Aurora 5-4 in another first-round match.

No. 1 seed Carl Junction and second-seeded Mount Vernon had byes in the opening round.

Wednesday’s 9 a.m. semifinals are Thomas Jefferson vs. Mount Vernon — previously a 5-4 winner this season against the Cavaliers — at the Millennium and Carl Junction vs. Monett at the Thomas Jefferson courts. The final is set for 1 p.m. at the Millennium.

Thomas Jefferson, in ousting CHC, also received singles wins from Evadna Rodriguez, Marieke John, Heather Smith and Lia Wu.

The Cougars’ Courtney Byrne won by forfeit at No. 6 singles.

The Individual championships in the district will be settled on Saturday with singles at the Millennium and doubles at Thomas Jefferson.

VOLLEYBALL

Glendale beats Cardinals in 3

WEBB CITY, Mo. — Glendale rebounded from a loss in the first set and defeated Webb City 22-25, 25-22, 25-11 in a nonconference match.

Jessi Heuertz paced Webb City with 13 assists, 12 kills and three digs. Teammate MacKenzie Lewis had nine kills, five aces and three digs.

Greenfield outlasts Cavaliers

GREENFIELD, Mo. — Greenfield outlasted Thomas Jefferson 16-25, 25-12, 25-16 in a nonconference match.

Paige Hargis led Greenfield with eight kills and four blocks, while Samantha Mountjoy led Thomas Jefferson with five kills and six blocks.
