Prep roundup: Neosho rallies to top Joplin

NEOSHO, Mo. — Neosho, trailing 7-0 after one inning, rallied to knock off Joplin 13-11 in nonconference high school baseball on Saturday.

The Wildcats, 11-3 under Donny Pennington, scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase an 11-10 deficit.

The Eagles, 8-6, had a six-game winning streak snapped.

Said Joplin coach Kirk Harryman: “Give Neosho credit. They made some outstanding defensive plays. They made the most of their late opportunities.”

Trey Turner’s solo homer for Neosho tied it in the sixth inning. Logan Stuart then singled and Brendan Craig homered. Turner pitched the seventh inning to save the decision for Kyler Finley.

Craig finished with two homers, a double and five RBI. He also drew two walks (Joplin hurlers issued five walks and hit as many batters).

The Eagles had eight of their 11 hits in the first inning with Tristan Ash delivering a two-run double.

Joplin received three hits, including a homer, from Nate Brummer. Adding two hits each were Brett Graham, Gavin Jones and Rex Whisner.

Added Harryman: “We lost the momentum and weren’t able to regain it.”

Joplin 6, Jefferson City 3

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Joplin won four of six singles matches and defeated Jefferson City on Saturday at the Washington Park courts.

Luke Frogge, Edran Ali and Duncan Ford won their singles matches, and Jeremy Lynn won his No. 1 singles match by injury default.

Frogge and Ali, along with Lynn and Ford, won their doubles matches.

“Jefferson City is a team we possibly could face in the sectionals,” said Joplin head coach Sean McWilliams. “They’re a strong team in their area.

“Today, we defeated a very strong team. I’m proud of how the boys played today,” he said. “It was a big win for our program.”
