Webb City boys, Pittsburg girls win track titles at Girard

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Webb City’s boys and Pittsburg’s girls won team championships Friday in the Girard Optimist Track Meet.

Jarvis Jones led Webb City by winning the 100 and 200 meters as well as the 4x100 relay with Phoenix Johnson, Alex Christian and Trey Parra.

Logan Williams won the 300 hurdles and ran on the winning 4x400 relay with Dalton Humphrey, Parra and Kiante Hardin. Christian was second in the long jump.

“We had a poor showing Tuesday and I challenged the kids,” said Webb City head coach Mike Smith. “They ran hard and the effort was there. We’re healthy going into conference and districts and you can’t ask for any more than that.”

Carthage, which was second in the team standings, was led by Bryan Burns, who won the shot put and discus. Stefan Stokes won the 110 hurdles and was second in the 200.

“We’ve had some injuries that kind of held us back,” said Carthage head coach Andy Youngworth. “This was our first meet since our home meet where we had a full contingent of kids. Bryan Burns is the surprise of the year. He has taken it to a new level, especially in the shot.”

Kennan Harrison was second in the triple jump, and Ben Southwick was second in the 800 and ran on the second-place 4x800 relay with Carter Hensley, Jose Delval and Charles Whitehead.

Carthage was second in the 4x100 relay, just three-tenths of a second behind Webb City, with a team of Jordan Dangerfield, Cameron Priester, Harrison and Stokes.

Ryan Davidson led Joplin to a third-place showing overall by winning the 1600 and 3200. Ryan Beaver of College Heights was second in the 1600 and fourth in the 3200.

Tyler Albright of Galena won the long jump and triple jump, and Kacey Elias of Baxter Springs won the 400 and was third in the 800.

In the girls’ division, Grove was second in the team standings and Carthage was third, led by Kaylee Morgan, who won the 100 and the long jump and was second in the 400.

Savannah Beaver of College Heights won the 800 and 1600 and teammate Hailey Riesenmy was third in the long jump.

Mariah Sanders of Joplin won the pole vault and Makayla Tillman was second in the 200. Brittany Rose of Carl Junction was second in the 300 hurdles.
