NEOSHO, Mo. —
Webb City’s Jalen Vaden and Kohl Slaughter each scored 13 points Wednesday night in the Cardinals’ 56-46 victory against West Memphis (Ark.) in the first round of the Neosho Holiday Classic at Neosho High School.
Webb City took a 28-21 lead into halftime by outscoring the Blue Devils 12-7 in the second quarter. The Cardinals led 40-29 going into the fourth quarter.
“It was a good game against a quality opponent,” said Webb City assistant coach Jeremy Butler. “In the second and third quarters, we did a good job of just being patient and scoring.”
Nate Brown added 11 points for the Cardinals and Phoenix Johnson scored nine. Glen Burns led West Memphis with 10 points.
Webb City, 6-1, will face Memphis Sheffield at 6:30 p.m. today.
Xavier Kurth scored 26 points and led St. Joseph Lafayette past Carthage 78-62 in another first-day game.
Carthage originally was scheduled to play Van Buren (Ark.), but Van Buren’s arrival was delayed by a snowstorm.
Instead, Carthage took a 38-31 lead into halftime against the Fighting Irish, who took command of the game in the second half with a 32-point third quarter.
Nathan Reid led Carthage with 20 points. Anthony Turk scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, and Jaryd Coss had 10 points.
Bentonville outscored Neosho 21-4 in the first quarter and went on to defeat the Wildcats 59-34. Nick Smith of Bentonville and Trey Turner of Neosho each led their teams with 11 points.
Neosho will face McDonald County, which was defeated by Kansas City Ruskin 60-42, at 11:30 a.m. today.
In other games today, Pierce City, which was defeated by St. Louis Christian 60-30, will face Morrillton (Ark.) at 3:30 p.m., and Bentonville will face St. Joseph Lafayette at 12:30 p.m.
St. Louis Christian advanced to face Ruskin at 2 p.m., and Carthage will face Sunrise Christian at 5 p.m.
