Three Joplin wrestlers place in top four at league meet

From staff reports

CAMDENTON, Mo. — Three Joplin wrestlers placed in the top four Saturday in the Ozark Conference tournament.

Don Hollingshead, a senior at 152 pounds, defeated James Steiner of Rolla 7-1 for third place. Hollingshead was defeated in the semifinals 9-5 by David Hawk of Waynesville.

Christian Plassman, a freshman at 182, placed fourth after he was pinned by Brandon Fencher of Waynesville with 15 seconds left in the third-place match. Plassman trailed 12-9 before the pin.

“He was wrestling well, especially for a freshman,” said Eagles head coach David Myers.

Phillip Reitz, a freshman at 285, placed third by pinning Dusty Lucas of Rolla 1 minute, 17 seconds into the second period. Reitz was pinned in the second period of his semifinal match by Waynesville’s Jacob Semple, who is ranked No. 1 in Class 4.

Overall, Myers praised his youthful team’s effort.

“Some of these guys wrestled pretty tough. They were all pretty much freshmen and sophomores besides Don,” Myers said.

Waynesville, ranked No. 5 in Class 4, won its fifth consecutive conference team championship, while Joplin was seventh in the team standings with 87 points.

Joplin wrestles next in the Class 4, District 3 tournament Feb. 8-9 at Jefferson City.
