Jasper distance runner signs at Kansas Wesleyan

Jasper High School senior Ubaldo Rivera, who’s played a prominent role in the Eagles’ recent success in track, has signed a letter of intent with Kansas Wesleyan University of Salina.

Jasper coach Dave Davis said Thursday that Rivera helped the Eagles finish second in Class 1 in 2010.

“This is an opportunity for a terrific kid,” Davis said. “He’s worked hard for us since his freshman year.

“I believe Ubaldo has qualified for state every year (in some event),” Davis said. “We expect him to qualify again this year. We’re in a very tough district, however.

“He has a knack of stepping up when the competition becomes stronger,” Davis said.

“Ubaldo is a good athlete,” Davis said. “He played football as a freshman, sophomore and senior. He ran cross country as a junior.

“We’ll miss him a lot,” Davis said. “He also does a good job in the classroom.”

Rivera is busy in track. He runs the open 800 and 1,600 and is a member of the 3,200 and 1,600 relay teams.

Rivera anchors the relay events, Davis said, with junior Colton Sweeney, senior/brother Austin Sweeney and senior Landon Osborn in the 1,600. Junior Jacob Holliday, Osborn and junior Joel Rivera — Ubaldo’s brother — complete the 3,200.

Osborn also is headed for Kansas Wesleyan, an NAIA school, to play football.

Ubaldo is the son of Maria and Hector Rivera.
