Lamar runs to title

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — Lamar won its first state track and field championship Saturday in the MSHSAA Class 2 Track and Field Championships at Dwight Reed Stadium.

Lamar won the meet with 79 points. Cleveland NJROTC was second with 40 points and Charleston was third with 34.

The Tigers began their push for the title on Day 2 by winning the first event, the 4x800 relay, with a team of Josh Garfield, Zachary Ray, Landon Compton and Drew Buckner.

“We (Austin Boice) won the shot put, and Drew Buckner came from behind and ran a 1:56.9 on the anchor leg of the 4x800,” said Lamar head coach Rodney Baldridge. “Those two events were big for us right off the bat today.”

Lamar placed fourth in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays and was fifth in the 4x400 relay.

“We had an injury to one of our sprinters (Jared Beshore), and our alternate, Taylor Sheat, stepped up and ran in both the 4x100 and 4x200,” Baldridge said.

Cade Payne was fourth in the 100, fifth in the 200 and ran in the 4x100 and 4x200 relays.

“He was sick all day, too,” Baldridge said. “He ran through a lot of sickness.”

The state title is Lamar’s fourth in the last two school years. Lamar won football championships in 2011 and 2012 and the Class 2 cross country title last fall.
