Several area Kansas basketball teams learned who they will play in the first round as the state tournament brackets were released Sunday.
The St. Mary’s-Colgan Panthers (17-5) were given the No. 7 seed and will face No. 2 Scott City (22-1) in the first round of the Kansas Class 3A boys state tournament at 3 p.m. Thursday in Hutchinson.
Colgan advanced to the state tournament by beating Riverton 74-54 in the sub-state finals on Saturday at St. Mary’s-Colgan. Scott City rolled in an 81-62 victory over Holcomb on Saturday at Kismet. Scott City’s only loss of the season came to Class 6A Wichita North 67-63 in overtime.
The Independence boys (18-5) earned the No. 5 seed and will face No. 4 Abilene (19-4) at 8:15 p.m. Wednesday in the Class 4A state tournament at Salina. In the 4A girls tournament at Salina, No. 4 Fort Scott (17-5) faces No. 5 Clearwater (16-6) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday, and No. 7 Labette County (15-7) plays No. 2 McPherson (20-3) at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.
No. 8 Oswego (14-9) matches up against No. 1 Meade (22-0) at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the Class 2A boys state tournament at Manhattan.
