Prep roundup: Joplin baseball opens with win over Willard

WILLARD, Mo. — Joplin High School opened its baseball season by beating Willard 2-1 in a nonconference game at Greenwade Field on Tuesday.

The Eagles tallied in the fourth and sixth innings to best Tiger senior left-hander Austin Raves.

“We’re thrilled with our pitching,” Joplin coach Kirk Harryman said of a trio of right-handers — freshman Tyler McGrew and seniors Blake Brown and Brett Graham. “McGrew, who left after one out and a runner aboard in the sixth inning, did very well considering it was against a good ballclub and his first varsity start.

“Blake (Brown) worked out of the trouble in the sixth inning and Brett (Graham), moving from third base, finished for the save,” Harryman said. “They combined for a four-hitter. McGrew struck out four, walked two and hit two batters.”

Joplin scored in the fourth inning on a double by Graham and a single by Tristan Ash. Willard caught up in the fifth inning before the Eagles retaliated in the sixth on a single by Nate Brummer, a stolen base, an infield single by Ash and a two-out, squeeze bunt single by Gavin Jones.

Ash and Brummer each had two hits.

The Eagles hope to stage their home opener at 4:30 p.m. Thursday against Nevada at Wendell Redden Field.

Carl Junction 11, Rogersville 5

ROGERSVILLE, Mo. — Left fielder Nate Landes’ two hits and four RBI keyed the Bulldogs in the Branson Steve Lael Leadoff Classic contest.

Carl Junction (2-1) will step out of the Lael Classic today to entertain Springfield Glendale at 4:30 p.m.

Catcher Kurtlin Hulette added three hits and two RBI.

Senior right-handers Ethan Hatfield, who worked into the seventh, and Branche McGriff, hurled for Carl Junction.

Webb City postponed

The Cardinals hope to play at 6 tonight in the Lael Classic event at Republic.

Webb City coach Chris Taylor said the game was moved from Tuesday because of non-baseball issues.

Republic will entertain Lebanon at 4 p.m. before facing Webb City, Taylor said.
