Dunbar signs with Neosho County

RIVERTON, Kan. — MacKenzie Dunbar displayed her athletic versatility throughout her Riverton High School career.

She played all five positions on the basketball court.

During the track season, she has run the 1600 meters, 800, 400, 300 hurdles, 200 and 100. She’s also competed in the high jump.

She also played volleyball, and she was a cheerleader.

So Dunbar had two choices to make as her senior year concludes — which sport and which school.

She chose basketball, and on Monday morning in the high school library, Dunbar signed a letter of intent with Neosho County Community College in Chanute.

“It was between track and basketball for sure,” she said. “Basketball is definitely my favorite. I grew up with basketball, and it’s just something I love to do.”

Dunbar averaged 11 points and five rebounds per game last season. She expects to play point guard in college.

“She’s been tough, she’s a leader, she’s played about every role … all five positions on the floor offensive and defensively without complaint,” Rams coach Will Mallatt said. “What’s been good for the team, she’s been more than willing to do throughout her four-year career.

“She had to play all five positions, especially last year and this year. She had to play the 5 (center position) some, she had to guard the 5 a lot. She was more than willing to do what we needed.”

Dunbar also considered attending Missouri Southern and Pittsburg State, but they were more track-oriented. Neosho County does have a track program, so does Dunbar have any interest in being a two-sport athlete?

“Probably not,” she said with a laugh.
