CHC's Taylor signs to play volleyball at Florida juco

Don’t bet against College Heights Christian School senior Athen Taylor.

Taylor had her heart set on landing a volleyball scholarship from a Florida school, CHC coach Mary Colin said.

And, by golly, Florida is where Taylor is headed.

Taylor signed a letter of intent on Wednesday with Pasco-Hernando Community College of New Port Richey.

Taylor’s story basically starts with her looking around to find a school in Florida that needed a setter.

She discovered that Hillsborough was holding a tryout. A call was placed to that school. Hillsborough didn’t need a setter but it had a tip. Check out Pasco-Hernando. Coach Colin called the Conquistadors. Yes, they needed a setter, and the Taylors took an un-Sunday like drive of several hours for a tryout.

“She shined at that tryout,” Colin said. “They (Pasco-Hernando) use a fast offense. She likes it. She knows how to control the court. Pasco-Hernando is a strong program. She had her heart set on Florida.”

Said Taylor: “I know they have strong tradition. It will be tough. I realize I’ll have to work hard.”

Pasco-Hernando, coached by Kansas State graduate Kim Whitney, was an NJCAA Division II regional runner-up last fall and won the 2010 national championship.

Taylor, a two-year starter for Class 2 CHC, was an academic all-stater as a senior and was all-region. Also, she was all-district and all-Spring River Valley Conference two seasons.

Taylor, the daughter of Myli Taylor and Scott Moore, plans to major in elementary education.

Athen, who transferred from McAuley Catholic after her freshman year, will have family in Florida. Her brothers, Coyn, 10, and Cadyn, 7, and mom are moving with her.

Myli Taylor is the former McDonald County athlete who played basketball at Crowder College.

The name Athen? That came, Myli said, from her late mom Ann.
