Purdy falls to Billings in Class 2 sectional

BILLINGS, Mo. — Purdy was unable to secure key hits in losing 2-0 to Billings and Dawson Meyer 2-0 on Monday in the sectional round of the MSHSAA Class 2 playoffs.

“We had several chances,” Purdy coach Joshua Hughes said. “We couldn’t get the big hit or RBI, We hit several balls hard right at fielders. Credit Billings and Meyer.”

The Wildcats opened the scoring on Sawyer Hawkins’ home run in the second inning. They scored their second run in the fifth on an intentional pass to Austin Essick, a single by Nathan Smith and an error.

Purdy mustered a double by Cameron Terry and singles by Brent Cornman and Robby Moody.

Terry, a senior left-hander (7-1), allowed four hits, struck out eight and walked four with three passes intentional to all-stater Essick. Junior right-hander Meyer struck out seven and walked one.

Ozark 7 Conference champion Purdy finished 12-11 overall in giving coach Hughes five district titles in eight seasons. Two Eagle editions reached the quarterfinals.

Billings, 13-8, faces Belle or Hartville in the quarterfinals.
