Girls basketball returns to Thomas Jefferson next year

Thomas Jefferson Independent Day School of Joplin will resume its girls varsity basketball program with the 2013-14 season, said athletic director Chris Myers.

The school is actively searching for a varsity coach because of the number of players who are expected next season, Myers said Tuesday.

“We just have numbers,” Myers said. “We played a junior varsity schedule this year and we had six girls. We anticipate 10 to 12 next year, so we’ll be jumping back into a varsity schedule.”

The Cavaliers won three games in the 2010-11 season, then dropped varsity basketball because they had only two returning players who were interested in playing.

Thomas Jefferson’s girls will return to the Ozark 7 Conference where they will be matched against McAuley Catholic, Exeter, Purdy, Southwest, Verona and Wheaton.

“We’re going to be very young,” Myers said. “Our jayvee team was five freshmen and a junior, so we’re looking for someone to be patient and help build the program back to where it was not too long ago.”

The Cavaliers had hosted an annual girls basketball tournament that was moved to Diamond two years ago and was hosted by the Wildcats. The tournament will not return to Thomas Jefferson, Myers said.
