Colgan blanks Galena in district opener

GALENA, Kan. — St. Mary’s-Colgan opened its Class 3A District 8 schedule with a 21-0 victory over Galena on Friday night at Abbey Field.

The Panthers (5-2, 4-2 CNC League) got on the board first as Conner Dayton ran the ball for 64 yards on Colgan’s first drive. He picked up 50 yards on the Panthers’ first play from scrimmage and ended the drive with an 11-yard touchdown run.

Galena’s third possession of the night was extended when the Panthers committed a roughing the kicker penalty. But the drive ended when Colgan recovered a fumble by Galena quarterback Nick Sivert, ending the Bulldogs’ deepest penetration of the game.

After a fumbled snap on their first possession of the second half, the Panthers scored twice in the third period on a two-yard run by Dayton and three-yard run by V.J. Piccini.

“Conner (Dayton) ran hard,” Panthers coach Chuck Smith said. “He cut on a dime as they played him to the outside. He cut back in and picked up some good yardage and our line blocked well.”

Dayton converted two pitch plays in the first scoring drive in the third quarter for 49 yards and accounted for 52 of the 56 yards on that drive.

Galena completed the only pass in the game as backup quarterback Kyler Cook connected with Logan Johnson on a screen pass with 4:20 left to play. 

“We knew Galena was going to be tough,” Smith said. “We tried to throw the ball but we just didn’t throw it well. We beat a good team tonight, and we feel really good about the win.”

The Panthers limited Galena to six first downs.

“Our defense had a great game. I think that was the strongest part of our game,” Smith said. “We stopped them down in scoring territory in the first quarter, and I am very proud of our boys tonight.”
