State golf: Joplin's Stout 'very happy' with start

Joplin’s Samantha Stout declared herself “very happy” after Monday’s opening 18 holes in the MSHSAA Girls Class 2 Golf Championships.

Stout, a sophomore, shot an 11-over-par 84 for seventh place at The Dalhousie Golf Club in Cape Girardeau.

 “It was a very good round,” Stout said of the 42-42. “I had a rough start. I started with a triple (bogey) and double (bogey) but I managed to bring it back.

“I’m very happy,” Stout said. “The course is very demanding,”

Stout is scheduled to tee off at 10:27 a.m. for today’s 18 holes.

“I’m thinking about being patient and one shot at a time,” Stout said of today’s round.

Class 1 Mount Vernon, paced by Ashley Childers, is fourth in the team standings after the first round at Meadow Lake Acres Country Club in New Bloomfield.

Childers’ 86 led Mount Vernon to a 400. Leader Westminster Christian Academy of St. Louis shot 330.

Stout is with dad Todd, a 1988 Joplin High School graduate, and Joplin athletics director Jeff Starkweather at Cape Girardeau. Starkweather is subbing for coach Shannon Neill, who’s expecting her first child this week.

Said Starkweather: “The Dalhousie is a tough course. There are lots of bunkers. The grass is thick, native. You have an opportunity to post some high numbers is you don’t keep the ball in the fairway.”

The elder Stout, a standout basketball player for the Eagles (Samantha’s mom Wendy, formerly Reed, also was an athlete), turned 43 on Monday.

 “What a birthday present,” Todd Stout said. “It was a very fine performance on a difficult course. Wendy stayed home with our youngest daughter, Jessica, 12.”

Added Starkweather: “Samantha is in the thick of the chase seeking all-state (the top 15).”

Carthage’s Abbey Catron is tied for 38th in the medalist hunt with a 95.

Individual leader with a 73 — and a four-stroke lead — is Amanda Kim of Fort Zumwalt South.

Team leader, with 358, is St. Louis Lafayette. Kansas City Notre Dame de Sion and Columbia Rock Bridge are 2-3 with 367 and 368, respectively.

Class 1 at New Bloomfield

NEW BLOOMFIELD, Mo. — The Mountaineers’ Childers is tied for 10th entering today’s 18 holes.

St. Louis Villa Duchesne (363) and Sedalia Sacred Heart (373) are the teams chasing Westminster Academy.

Other Mount Vernon scores: Megan Pope 102, Lexi Farmer 105, Hayley Bowles 107 and Hailee Dudley 108.

Seneca received a 99 from Elyssa Esposito and a 117 from Tiana Brownen.

Nevada’s Hannah Householder had a 105.
