MONETT, Mo. —
Monett scored five runs in the first three innings, giving pitcher Allie Krueger more than enough support, and ran away with a 7-2 win over Bolivar in the sectionals of the Class 3 state softball tournament.
Monett (23-5) hosts Jefferson City Blair Oaks, a 13-5 winner over Sullivan, on Saturday in the state quarterfinals.
Krueger earned the win, scattering three hits while striking out 13. She held Bolivar to lone runs in the third and sixth innings.
Abby Krueger gave Monett a 1-0 lead in the first with the first of her two RBI triples. The second came in the Cubs’ two-run seventh inning. She finished 2-for-4 with three RBI.
Jessica Harper added an RBI triple in the second before Monett made it 5-0 with two runs in the third. Kelsey Wiseman was 2-for-3 with a triple for the Cubs, who had four triples on the night.
Pierce City 1, Lamar 0
LAMAR, Mo. — Pierce City scored an unearned run in the third inning, spoiling Emmie Robertson’s pitching gem and advanced to the Class 2 state quarterfinals.
The Eagles (19-6) will face Pleasant Hope on Saturday. The Pirates, last year’s state runner-up, topped Iberia 11-0 on Wednesday. Lamar finished its season 18-5 with three 1-0 defeats.
Robertson struck out 13 and allowed just two hits, but her one walk with one out in the third inning led to the game’s only run, which scored on a throwing error.
Lamar had six hits, including Taylor Hardman’s triple in the fifth inning, but Hardman was thrown out at home on a grounder to second.
McKenzie Moreland got the win for Pierce City, striking out five and walking none in the shutout effort.
Robertson finished the season with 289 strikeouts.
Grain Valley 6, Nevada 3
GRAIN VALLEY, Mo. — Nevada’s Christian Novak and Grain Valley’s Brooklyne Simbeck combined to strike out 32 batters, but Grain Valey’s four-run outburst in the third inning was enough to end Nevada’s season in the Class 3 sectionals.
Simbeck struck out 17 while scattering five hits and earning the win. Novak fanned 15 for Nevada, but she trailed 4-0 after the third inning.
Grain Valley added two more in the fifth before Madilene Culbertson delivered a two-out, three-run double to cut the lead to 6-3 in the top of the sixth
Nevada finishes the season 17-9. Grain Valley (23-6) advances to play Trenton, a 1-0 winner over St. Joseph Benton, in the state quarterfinals at Trenton on Saturday.
