Riverton's Mitchell signs to play softball at MSSU

Shelby Mitchell, a pitcher-infielder from Riverton High School, has signed a letter-of-intent to continue her softball career at Missouri Southern.

Mitchell was a four-year starter for the Rams, coached by her father Brian Mitchell. She played third base or first base when she wasn’t pitching.

Mitchell batted .450 her freshman year, helping the Rams to the Class 3A state championship. She earned all-state honors as a sophomore and junior — her senior season is still going — and she was first team all-CNC League pitcher the last two years.

Last summer she played on the Frontenac Flames team that won the Class B state championship.

“Shelby is very versatile,” Missouri Southern coach Bill Gray said in a press release. “She pitches, can play a corner (infield position) and hit for power. And on top of that, she is very competitive.”

Mitchell also was a letter winner four years in volleyball and three years in basketball. In the weight room she holds school records for the bench press, squat and power clean.

Mitchell, the daughter of Brian and Kim Mitchell, plans to major in nursing at Missouri Southern. Her sister, Cheslyn, is a sophomore on the Pittsburg State softball team.
