Eagles heat up from long range, whip West Plains in conference

WEST PLAINS, Mo. — Joplin’s balanced boys hit a season best 10 treys in beating West Plains 62-55 in an Ozark Conference prep basketball final on Friday night.

The Eagles (14-9, 4-5) on Tuesday visit Carl Junction.

Said Eagle coach Jeff Williams: “Our second straight win is a good finish to the conference. “Our guys were ready to play. Connor McCord (a 6-foot-1 senior) gave us a big lift off the bench. Dillon McVay (6-4 junior) did a good job running the point with Charlie Brown in foul trouble.”

McCord sank four 3s in scoring 12 points. Daniel Stokes, 6-3 senior who had five treys, tallied 17 and was backed by 6-4 seniors Abe Hueller (13) and Adam St. Peter (10).

Nixa boys 76, Webb City 53

NIXA, Mo. — Missouri State-bound guard Austin Ruder scored 27 points to pace the Eagles in the Central Ozark Conference Large Division contest.

Nixa outscored the Cardinals 20-4 in the second period to lead 33-22 at the half.

Ruder, 6-1 senior who tossed in five 3s, was backed by Bryce Dulin’s 18 points.

Senior guard Phoenix Johnson scored 19 points to lead Webb City (16-8, 2-4). Kohl Slaughter added 18 and Jalen Vaden had 10.

Sarcoxie girls 60, CHC 52

Sarcoxie pulled away in the third quarter and held off College Heights Christian.

College Heights led 29-28 at halftime before Sarcoxie outscored the Cougars 15-8 in the third quarter.

Bethany Bloss led Sarcoxie with a 15 points while Janelle DePrieste added 11 and Rachel Baldwin had 10.

Kirsty Green scored a game-high 19 points and four steals for College Heights, and Afton Cleavenger added 16 and 12 rebounds. Jasmine Johnson added 10.
