BAXTER SPRINGS, Kan. —
Baxter Springs’ homecoming was spoiled by Riverton as the Rams put up 22 points in the second quarter en route to a 43-14 victory..
The first quarter saw Baxter Springs (0-5) take its first lead of the season. Senior running back Amos Bindel had 12 carries during the 81-yard drive, the last one good for a two-yard touchdown. Junior quarterback Derek Barnes added the 2-point conversion run to give the Lions an 8-7 lead.
The Rams (3-2) took control in the second quarter as junior quarterback Chandler Underhill scored from 4 and 12 yards out and then connected on a 45-yard pass to senior wide receiver Dylan Weaver. Underhill added a 2-point conversion on his first touchdown of the quarter, and sophomore Landon North kicked two extra points.
“We were able to execute (better) in the second quarter,” Rams coach Derrick Rider said. “We had some injuries coming into this game and were able to get some things going. I was very proud of our effort.”
In the second half the Rams added two more touchdowns. Underhill connected with North on a 32-yard pass play in the third quarter, and senior running back Greyson Spriggs scored on a 16-yard run in the fourth period.
Bindel ran the ball 42 times for 192 yards and two touchdowns as the Lions ran 62 times for a total of 207 yards.
“They ran a little different style of offense than what we saw on film,” said Rider. “We had to tighten down our outside linebackers and make plays there. Our defensive line did a good job taking on double teams and the linebackers did a good job filling the hole.”
The Rams rushed 24 times for 67 yards, and Underhill went 16-for-30 through the air for 288 yards — 244 in the first half.
“We were able to come out and have success early and we stuck with the pass attack,” Rider said. “We had some new guys playing at new positions and we were able to get them up to game speed in that first half.”
Baxter Springs has another league game next Friday at Frontenac while Riverton entertains Parsons in a nonconference game.
