Olivia Chen of Thomas Jefferson won the Class 1 District 11 girls tennis championship on Friday.
Chen, the top seed, defeated Emily Cook of Carl Junction 6-3, 6-1 in the final. Both players won their semifinal matches by identical 6-3, 6-1 scores — Chen over Rebecca O’Hanahan of Carl Junction and Cook over Alexandra Ross of Monett.
O’Hanahan beat Ross 8-0 in the third-place match.
The top-seeded team also won the doubles title as Mount Vernon’s Paige McCoy-Emily Fenton defeated Kenzie Kuykendall-Madison Adrian of Carl Junction 6-3, 7-5.
Semifinal matches saw McCoy-Fenton beat Heather Smith-Lia Wu of Thomas Jefferson 6-2, 6-2 and Kuykendall-Adrian win over Thisbe Scholfield-Johnson and Evadne Rodriguez of Thomas Jefferson.
The top two finishers in singles and doubles advance to next week’s sectional round.
SOCCER
Joplin 7, Cassville 0
Ryan Estus scored a hat trick in Joplin’s 7-0 victory against Cassville in the Joplin soccer tournament at Joplin Athletic Complex.
Estus scored on a free kick 13 minutes into the match and followed with a goal assisted by Luis Santillan late in the first half that gave Joplin a 4-0 lead.
Estes scored again early in the second half with an assist by Garrett Ward. “We rested him a little bit yesterday,” said Joplin head coach Ed Miller. “He came back tonight and had a hat trick.”
The shutout was Joplin’s 12th of the season. Eagles goalkeeper Brock Renken had four saves.
Domi Salcedo scored two goals for the Eagles with assists from Joe Rice and Jonathon Ponce. Rice gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead with a goal in the first half assisted by Ponce, and Ward scored unassisted midway through the second half.
Carl Junction 4, Webb City 1
Landon Bray recorded a hat trick to lead Carl Junction past Webb City in the Joplin tournament.
Bray scored a pair of unassisted goals to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead before Webb City cut the deficit in half with Matt Reynolds’ goal.
Lane Morril found the back of the net before halftime to up Carl Junction’s lead to 3-1 and Bray scored his final goal in the second half for the 4-1 margin.
Carl Junction (11-5) outshot Webb City 23-4.
SOFTBALL
Eagles top CHC
SARCOXIE, Mo. — Bailee Hayward went 4-for-5 with two doubles and five RBI as Pierce City defeated College Heights 8-0 in the Class 2, District 5 championship game.
Hayward’s first two-run double gave the Eagles a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning. Hayward had another two-run double in a four-run fifth inning.
Becca Morin, Brooke Ridenour and Emily Ashley each had two hits for Pierce City. Morin, Ridenour and Hayward each scored two runs.
Pierce City pitcher McKensie Moreland allowed three hits, walked one and struck out eight.
