CHC's Beaver, Lamar's Sturgell win cross country races

Ryan Beaver of College Heights Christian outran four Lamar runners to the finish line Thursday and won the Carl Junction Invitational boys cross country meet.

Beaver’s time of 16 minutes, 38 seconds edged second-place Kaden Overstreet of Lamar by 12 seconds. Overstreet was followed by teammates Drew Buckner, Zack Ray and Nick Ray.

Lamar won the team trophy, followed by Webb City and Carl Junction.

The race took place on a redesigned course east of the Carl Junction football stadium. “It’s a very flat course,” said Carl Junction head coach Adam Neldeberg. “Coaches like to come here because generally it’s a good place to PR (personal record). It’s all grass, no rough terrain.”

In the girls division, Kaelyn Sturgell of Lamar finished just ahead of JeLynn Tatum of Carl Junction, who each had a time of 20:09. Kelsey Andro of Webb City was six seconds behind in third place.

Carthage placed five runners in places 13 through 19 and won the team championship by two points over Webb City and Lamar.

“It was a small field, so every point is going to count,” said Carthage head coach Andy Youngworth. “There were two teams right behind us. Webb City was without their top runner.

“Still, if one of those girls doesn’t step up, we finish second or third. We were probably within a second of each other at the mile mark. The course was really flat, but you couldn’t get a lot of momentum because there were so many turns.”

Carthage’s top runner was junior Taylor Vaughn, who was 13th in 22:20.
