Mackenzie Dunbar of Riverton and two teammates return to the Kansas State Track and Field Meet, which begins today at Cessna Stadium on the campus of Wichita State University.
Dunbar, a junior, placed second in the Class 3 800 meters and was fourth in the 1600 at last year’s event. This year, her qualifying times are eighth best in the 800 and ninth best in the 1600.
“Going up to the state meet, my expectation is for her to try the best she can,” said Riverton head coach Derrick Rider. “Really, I wouldn’t be disappointed either way because I know she’ll do her very best and has very high expectations of herself.”
Kali Johnson of Riverton also returns as a state qualifier in the 100 hurdles, as does Tyler Schultz, who qualified in the 1600 and 3200. Schultz has the fourth best qualifying time in both events. Landon North qualified in the high jump.
“If she runs well, Kali has a chance to medal,” Rider said. “I’m proud of them. They stuck with it.”
Galena’s boys are represented by Tylor Albright in the long jump, triple jump and 100, Chad Shepherd in the long jump and pole vault, and Jared Carver in the 300 hurdles. Jessica Henson advanced in the girls’ 100 and 200.
In Class 4, Kacey Elias of Baxter Springs will run in the boys’ 400. Michaela O’Brien of Labette County is the top qualifier in the girls’ 3200 and has the third-best qualifying time in the 1600.
