MANHATTAN, Kan. —
Blake Vail threw a complete-game gem and four of Frontenac’s starting nine had a pair of hits each as the Raiders topped Silver Lake 5-2 in the first round of the Kansas Class 3A state baseball tournament on Friday at Kansas State’s Tointon Family Stadium.
The win moves Frontenac (22-2) into today’s 10 a.m. semifinal round where it will face 23-0 and top-ranked Humboldt.
“We’re happy about (Friday). We walked off the field feeling good,” Frontenac coach Bill Sullivan said. “But the kids are already focused on Humboldt. They’re ready for the next step.”
Vail went the distance in earning the win, allowing two runs on six hits while striking out six and walking none.
Ross Edge and Matt Standlee turned a pair of double plays, including one that ended the game after Silver Lake had scored a run in the top of the seventh.
“Defensively, we were there,” Sullivan said. “We played well an Blake threw a great game for us. And the hits came.”
Bryce Burdette, Bryan Wade, Edge and Avery Coronado each had two hits. Those four plus Vail had one RBI each.
