SPRINGFIELD, Mo. —
Jeremy Lynn became just the second Joplin tennis player to earn an individual state medal on Saturday, winning a pair of matches to claim fifth place at the MSHSAA Class 2 Individual Championships at the Cooper Tennis Complex.
Lynn lost the his first set of the day before rebounding for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win over Micah Klousia, a Glendale freshman who Lynn had defeated three times already.
He then beat Lee’s Summit West’s Brian Heifner 6-3, 7-5 to join Jon Lazenby as the only individual medalists in school history.
“Jeremy had a great, great year and this was a good way for him to end it,” Joplin coach Sean McWilliams said. “He was disappointed after losing (Friday) and he wasn’t too sharp in the first set (Saturday), but I was proud of the way he came back.
“After he dropped the first set, he knew he still had the talent to come back and win. He didn’t get flustered and he bounced back with confidence.”
Joplin’s sophomore doubles team of Luke Frogge and Edran Ali fell to Rockhurst’s Samuel Crawford and Samuel Wells 6-3, 60 in the consolation bracket, missing out on a chance to play for fifth place.
“Unfortunately they don’t play it out for seventh place, but Luke and Edran had a great season,” McWilliams said. “They were the youngest doubles team at state and for them to finish in the top eight is a huge accomplishment. I’m excited for them to come back next year, along with Jeremy.
“It was an outstanding weekend for Joplin and Joplin tennis. I couldn’t be prouder of our kids. We had a great season.”
