McAuley developing ball-control offense

Developing a ball-control offense with big-play capabilities is the focus of McAuley Catholic in this summer’s 7-on-7 passing league at Junge Field.

The Warriors executed their quick passing game, directed by starting quarterback Mitch Ware, in a 7-on-7 outing Monday night against Afton.

“We came out ready to play and they did a really good job,” said head coach Brenden Gubera, who returns after three years at Hermann. “Mitch looked good and made some good decisions for the most part. To hold a team to 12 points in 7-on-7 is pretty good.”

McAuley won the game 35-12 with the help of four interceptions — two apiece by Greg Carney and Cole Lowry. The Warriors, who will compete in Class 1 this fall, are preparing for a schedule that includes Ash Grove and opponents from the Spring River Valley Conference. Although not a member of the SRVC, the Warriors’ season begins Aug. 24 at Sarcoxie.

On offense, Gubera said he’s looking at either Collin Hughes or Trey Melton as the starting tight end.

“We have a battle for our tight end position, and both of them played well (Monday night),” he said. “August 6 (first day of preseason practice) will be here before you know it.

“They’re buying into it,” he said of his offensive unit. “The next play could be coming their way depending on the defense. We want them to use their legs to turn it into a big play.”

McAuley, which competed in Class 2 the last two years, and College Heights have ended a cooperative agreement for high school football, said College Heights athletics director Eric Johnson.

The two schools will continue their junior high program.
