Carthage, Webb City win in girls division

Carthage’s girls subdued Seneca by scoring 13 unanswered points in the third quarter of a 71-47 victory Thursday in the Neosho Holiday Classic at Neosho Middle School.

Senior guard Chloe Shepherd scored 10 of her 18 points in the third quarter after the Tigers had seen an 18-point lead dwindle as Seneca came within 39-33 early in the second half.

“We got into foul trouble,” said Carthage head coach Jim Moore. “We had a couple of silly fouls and ended the half with four of our starters on the bench.”

Seneca, which trailed 32-14 with five minutes left in the first half, began to chip away at the lead from the free-throw line.

Seneca sank nine of 12 free throws in the second quarter, and a long 3-pointer by Willow Rhoades as the half ended brought the Indians to within 37-29.

“We got a defensive lift from Willow Rhoades off the bench, but the entire team gave a good defensive effort,” said Seneca head coach Bob Coffey. “I thought with our effort and intensity we matched them pretty well. I hope it was fun to watch.”

After Carthage’s third-quarter run, the closest the Indians could get was 54-41 after an 8-2 spurt that included two baskets by Rachel Butterfield and a field goal and an assist by Bailey Skelton.

“They kept battling even though we were down to a very good team,” Coffey said. “That’s very encouraging.”

Carthage began the game with a 14-0 run that included two 3-pointers by Vanessa Pawlak, who led the Tigers with 20 points. Two 3-three pointers by Seneca’s Mollie Cooper helped cut Carthage’s lead to 20-12 late in the first quarter.

Cooper and Skelton, both juniors, each had 12 points, as did Carthage’s Quincy Charleston.



Webb City 54, Purdy 31

Webb City ended a defensive stalemate and broke a 16-16 halftime tie with a 22-point third quarter.

Casey Heger and Mikaela Burgess led Webb City with 19 points apiece and Kaitlin Beason scored 10.

“Heger played outstanding,” said Webb City head coach Brad Shorter. “Mikaela showed she can distribute the ball and be a complete player.”

Heger scored the Cardinals’ first five points of the second half on a 3-pointer and an offensive rebound after a missed shot.

After a 3-pointer by Billie House helped Purdy cut the lead to 28-24, Webb City closed out the third quarter with a 10-2 run that began with a basket by Heger assisted by Burgess.

Webb City limited Purdy to one field goal in the last 9 minutes, 43 seconds. Senior forward Mattie White led the Eagles with 11 points.

White scored six of Purdy’s 10 points in the second quarter as the Eagles overcame an early 9-2 deficit.

“Yesterday we missed our inside shots. Today we missed our outside shots,” Shorter said. “We were getting the ball where it needed to go, it just wasn’t going in the basket.”
