Hueller's double-double sparks Joplin in league opener

Abe Hueller, 6-foot-3 senior, was a scoring and rebounding machine for the Joplin Eagles on Tuesday night.

Hueller registered a double-double with 19 points and 14 rebounds as the Eagles rolled past Lebanon 79-51 Tuesday night in an Ozark Conference boys basketball opener in Lebanon.

“Hueller played a great game,” Eagles coach Jeff Williams said on Wednesday. “He actually had a double-double in the first half — 14 points and 10 rebounds.

“Our three ‘bigs’ (Hueller, Adam St. Peter and Tucker Wallace) were good together. They all played well and got a lot of touches. That was a big part of the game.”

St. Peter and Wallace finished with nine and eight points, respectively.

Guard Charlie Brown contributed 16 points while playing about half of the game.

“We were worried because Charlie had the flu the night before,” Williams said. “He operated on crackers and Gatorade. Dillon McVay and Daniel Stokes played quite a few minutes at the point and did a good job.”

Joplin (7-3) took command early and owned leads of 19-4 after one quarter, 36-15 at the intermission and 63-29 after three quarters.

“I was very pleased,” Williams said. “It’s good to start out 1-0 in the conference.”

The Eagles continue league play Friday night at home against Camdenton. The freshman game at 4:30 tips off the three-game session at Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium on the Missouri Southern campus.

Camdenton lost at Glendale 65-59 in overtime on Tuesday night.
