Dick Purdy, the legendary Lawrence High School football coach who also coached at Chanute, Chetopa, Shawnee Mission West and Rockhurst (Mo.), is one of five inductees into the 2013 class of the Kansas State High School Activities Association Hall of Fame.
The other inductees include former Kansas State Wildcats women’s basketball star Shalee Lehning, former Wichita State track and field star Lindsay (Eck) Gray, former Fort Scott administrator Ernest Hawkins and former KSHSAA executive Victor Sisk.
Purdy won six Kansas state football championships, winning with Shawnee Mission West in 1972 and with Lawrence in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993 and 1995. He coached in Chetopa from 1956-57 and in Chanute from 1958-66. In 33 years as a head coach, he was 273-140 with six ties.
Lehning, a three-sport athlete at Sublette from 2001-2005, won seven gold medals at state track and field, set state records for rebounds, assists and steals in basketball and was an all-league volleyball player.
Gray won 12 Class 1A state track and field titles from 1996-2000 at Beloit High School. She remains the only Kansas prep athlete to have swept state titles in the long jump all four years and one of only two athletes to sweep the 100-meter hurdles.
Hawkins, a principal and teacher at Plaza Elementary School in Fort Scott, organized a basketball league and team (the Whirlwinds) in eastern Kansas for African-American students because of segregation. From 1923-27, the Whirlwinds won 67 straight games.
Sisk served as assistant executive director at the KSHSAA for 17 years.
