Sarcoxie girls beat McAuley

SARCOXIE, Mo. — Sarcoxie, buoyed by a strong opening quarter, handed McAuley Catholic a 34-23 loss in a nonconference girls prep basketball game Monday night.

The Bears led 14-3 after one quarter and 26-16 at the half.

Grace Huff, a 5-foot-8 senior, sank four treys — all coming in the first half — and 5-5 classmate Megan Leonard added eight points for the Bears (2-7).

McAuley received 10 points from 5-5 senior Kambrey Wagner and nine from 5-10 senior Victoria Foley.

“I thought we played strong defense,” Sarcoxie coach April Ellis said. “We’ve been unable in the second half to score and play that well. We’ve lost four games by 11 points.

“We have some young players. They are responding and absolutely working hard,” Ellis said.

Huff had six 3s — all in the first half —and finished with 22 first-half points in a loss at Everton last week, Ellis said.
