Seneca beats Mount Vernon in overtime

SENECA, Mo. — The Seneca Indians had seen their last three seasons end at the hands of the Mount Vernon Mountaineers.

On Saturday night they took a step behind the 3-point line and put an end to that streak.

The Indians hit 10 treys — including seven straight to account for their final 21 points of regulation — and knocked off Mount Vernon 51-47 in overtime to claim the Class 3 District 12 title on their home court.

Seneca advances to face Strafford in the sectionals on Wednesday at Baptist Bible College in Springfield, Mo.

“They weren’t going to get four years on us,” said junior guard Bradley Jumper, who hit four 3-pointers, including one that sent the game into overtime and one that gave the Indians a 47-45 lead with 1:24 to play in the extra session. “This feels pretty good.”

Seneca had just two 3-pointers in the first half (the Indians scored just six second-quarter points on six free throws) and found itself in a 24-17 hole after Mount Vernon’s Chandler Myers opened the third quarter with a layup.

But Elias Roelfesma hit two foul shots, and Logan St. Clair hit a putback to cut it to 24-21 before Seneca went wild from beyond the arc.

Seth Harris’ trey tied it at 24 with 4:21 left in the third, and the Indians didn’t score another point inside the arc until overtime.

Harris and Kyler Ng, who led the Indians with 15 points, combined for a 9-0 run that put Seneca up 33-29 early in the fourth.

Mount Vernon went on an 13-6  run to take a 42-39 lad with 2:54 remaining, but Jumper’s 3-pointer with 2:30 left tied the game at 42 and ended up forcing overtime.

“Something just sparked,” Jumper said. “We didn’t want to give it up again. We got it in gear and started making shots.”

Mount Vernon scored the first three points of overtime before the Indians scored seven straight — including another Jumper trey — to take control.

“We knew it was going to be a battle,” Seneca coach Will King said. “But our kids never panicked. We were down the whole game and we stuck to the scouting report. These kids deserve it. They’ve battled all year. I’m so proud of them.”

Jumper added 13 for the Indians, while Harris had 10.

Myers, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, was stellar in pouring in a game-high 28 points for the Mountaineers. He was 12-of-13 from the field and scored nine straight in the second half, including all seven of the Mountaineers’ third-quarter points.
