Treasure Hunters Roadshow prompts search for artifacts

For Indiana Jones, recovering priceless artifacts means fighting Nazis and Communists, dodging booby traps, and risking life and limb in jungles and deserts.

Maybe all he really needed to do was look in his attic or basement.

On Wednesday, with much less fanfare than Jones’ adventures, residents turned out at the La Quinta Inn on Range Line Road for the Antique Treasure Hunters Roadshow in hopes that they had stumbled upon their own valuable finds.

Cecil Cox and his wife, Shirley, of Joplin, brought books, coins, old photographs and more, wondering if they might strike it rich.

“We brought a really old vase and a real old antique collectible lamp,” Cecil Cox said. “We bought an 11-room-house estate, and all this stuff was in it. The photo we brought — they gave us $200 for that.”

“We just wanted to come by and see what they were worth,” Shirley Cox added. “Some of the furniture from the house was there when it was built 118 years ago.”

Leon Rouse, a buyer for the Antique Treasure Hunters Roadshow, said some interesting and occasionally valuable objects turn up.

He showed an old, tin portrait of a young girl holding a porcelain doll. The back of the tintype has the birth date of July 14, 1906, and the death date of Nov. 21, 1914.

“She lived here in Joplin and is buried here, and that doll is buried with her,” Rouse said.

Some of the more common items the appraisers see include pocket watches, gold jewelry and clocks, but occasionally there’s a diamond in the rough.

“We just bought a Gibson guitar for about $8,500, and a guy a couple of weeks ago came in with 10 bronze statues and he walked out with $27,000,” Rouse said. “A lot of times, people are bringing this stuff in that they have had in the attic or the basement, and what’s surprising is that they don’t realize how much money they had sitting around.”
