Contractors, developers to speak on restorations

JOPLIN, Mo. — Historic restoration and the tax credits for it will be among the topics to be discussed Saturday at an annual preservation workshop put on by the Joplin Historic Preservation Commission.

The workshop will begin at 10 a.m. in the basement conference room at City Hall, 602 S. Main St. Registration will open at 9:30 a.m.

Jeff Neal, a local contractor who has restored several downtown buildings, will be one of the speakers. Neal is the contractor on the Gryphon Building, also known as the Interstate Grocer Association or Bagcraft building, at 1027 S. Main St. He is to speak on facade renovations at the downtown buildings on which he has worked.

Mark Williams, an owner and manager of several historic properties, will speak on his work restoring the Olivia Apartments at Fourth Street and Moffet Avenue.

Williams manages Main Street Place, 501 S. Main St.; the Orpheum Building, which runs from 528 to 532 S. Main St.; and the Paramount Building, which runs from 507 to 513 S. Main St.

Main Street Place, the original Christman Dry Goods Co. and later Howsmon’s Office Supply, has 26 loft apartments, all occupied.

During the two-hour workshop, participants will tour the DeGraff Building at 524 S. Main St.

After the workshop, Historic Murphysburg Preservation will hold a scavenger hunt of architectural details in the Murphysburg neighborhood. Murphysburg is the city’s only designated historic residential district.

Nancy Morton, chairwoman of the commission and a Murphysburg resident, said, “I welcome any participants, anybody interested in what is going on downtown and residents who have historic homes because we are making plans to spread out into some residential areas,” to designate more historic sites.

She said the workshop will give residents an opportunity to meet those who have experience in restoration if they might be interested in pursuing a renovation in the future.
