JOPLIN, Mo. —
The Joplin Police Department today released the name of a woman fatally shot in her home early Thursday and acknowledged that the shooting was reported as a suicide attempt.
Karen Norris, 48, died at Freeman Hospital West of a gunshot wound sustained inside her residence at 1423 S. Sergeant Ave. She was discovered in a bedroom of the home by police and emergency medical technicians responding to a 911 call at 12:45 a.m. Thursday.
Lt. Darren Gallup of the Joplin Police Department said investigators were still attempting to determine if the shooting was a homicide or a suicide. He said an autopsy was scheduled to be conducted today.
Wayne J. Fick, 47, who resides at the same address, was taken into custody Thursday morning on suspicion of a weapon violation. Police said he remained in custody Friday on what was being filed as a federal weapons offense.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol and Jasper County coroner are assisting in the death investigation.
