JOPLIN, Mo. —
A 1-year-old girl is reported to be in critical condition today at Children’s Hospital in Kansas City after being transported from a residence in a mobile home park in Joplin Tuesday night with a severe head injury from an apparent case of child abuse.
Newton County Sheriff Ken Copeland said emergency medical technicians and sheriff’s deputies were called at 9 p.m. to a residence in the BYKOTA Mobile Home Park on East 32nd Street.
The girl was not breathing when medical help arrived and cardiopulmonary resuscitation efforts were begun. She was taken to Freeman Hospital West and then flown to the hospital in Kansas City, where she remains in critical condition, the sheriff said.
Copeland said the child was suffering from severe head injury and internal bleeding and a 24-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of child abuse. The suspect’s name has not been released pending the filing of charges.
