Ceremony to mark push for Civil War memorial

Organizers hope that today’s ceremony marking the 150th anniversary of a Civil War battle northwest of Joplin also will encourage support to finance a permanent memorial on the site.

JOPLIN, Mo. — Plans for a regional broadband initiative will be outlined on Friday at a public meeting set for 10 a.m. to noon at the Joplin Public Library.

The program will be reviewed by officials of the Harry S. Truman Coordinating Council, and is part of a state plan for broadband service in Missouri. The coordinating council surveyed residents and businesses on their needs for broadband service and will discuss those findings at today’s session. Area residents also may attend to learn more and to provide input on program goals.

Similar meetings are being held throughout the state. Damon Porter, the director of MoBroadbandNow, will attend the session, along with members of the coordinating council and representatives of the University of Missouri. The initiative was created by Gov. Jay Nixon, to create public-private partnerships to increase the level of high speed Internet service in Missouri.
